Volunteering at Oshawa Little Theatre

Here are a few of the strange things that our member volunteers have been asked to do in the past few seasons:

  • Carve sheets of styrofoam to create very old-looking stone columns
  • Build 6 crazy and elaborate cakes out of cardboard and foam
  • Make a bat that flies across the auditorium
  • Paint and decorate a hospital ward, a burned-out lunatic asylum, the basement of a nunnery, a 1930's southern parlour,  a dockside tavern, a bordello and a farmhouse
  • Make doors that open and close on their own
  • Create huge walls that transform into bombed-out ruins
  • Transform a nightclub into a laboratory in the blink of an eye
  • Sew hundreds of costumes - animals, vampires, princes, knights in armour, 1920's flapper dresses, 1st World War soldier, scalliwags and thieves
  • Make snow fall on the stage
  • Beg, build or borrow props and more props - candelabras, swords, beds, sofas, pictures, tables, china, telephones, tv's, sinks, fridges, wood-burning stoves, coffins, curtains, rugs, christmas trees, chairs, lamps, fireplaces, radios, desks, a car, etc, etc.
And much, much more -
  • Operate the bar and the box office
  • Distribute posters
  • Do radio interviews
  • Write press releases
  • Design posters and programs
  • Design lighting and sound
  • Help backstage
  • Move furniture
  • Sweep up sawdust

Sometimes it's hard work.  Sometimes it drives you crazy  Most of the time, however, it's fun and it's a hobby that will give back as much as you can give.
